High Educational System in Canada

Community colleges in Canada can be accessed by students in their respective cities without having to go out of town and rent lodging. Usually, Community College issues diploma degrees, certificates and associate degrees. Meanwhile, University College is a vocational school that offers advanced programs to universities that cooperate to get a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

Children’s Education in Canada

In general, children go through kindergarten for one to two years at the age of four or five voluntarily. All children begin primary school education around the age of six. With the first year the school starts in September to June, but in some cases the school can also begin in January. Upper secondary schools consist of 11th grade or up to 12th grade depending on each province. After graduating from high school, students can continue to universities, colleges, and Cégep schools. Cégep is an French acronym for the College of General and Vocational Education, with a study period of generally two years or three years. This Cégep education system is located in the Province of Québec. Later in the year of university entry usually takes place from September to May. Students wishing to proceed to undergraduate programs can enter after successfully completing secondary school or a two-year program in Quebec. The bachelor’s degree alone spends three to four years of study depending on each province and the programs offered. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree, students proceed to a Masters program equivalent to a Masters with a study period of around two years. If students are interested in continuing to higher education, there is a Doctoral program that can only be taken after having a Masters degree with a study period of three to five years plus research and a dissertation.

Language Choice of the Study Program

Canada has two official languages, namely English and French. For you (students) who want to deepen your knowledge of English, you don’t need to worry because almost all universities offer language school programs including ESL (English as a Second Language) or FSL (France as a Second Language) program.

Pursuing Career through Studying

After graduating from the diploma, you can go directly to the university that cooperates with the diploma and complete the last two years of the undergraduate program. There are 175 post-secondary institutions joining the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC). Canada has a Career College that offers short training programs with career prospects including in the fields of multimedia, film, computer or internet, graphic design, or hospitality.

Studying While Working

For international students, the Off-Campus Work Permit Program gives the authority to work up to 20 hours per week while the study program is still ongoing. Meanwhile, full-time work is only during holidays such as winter, summer and spring. Furthermore, the students can also get an internship permit if the type of work is related to their study program in Canada and has been certified by an academic institution.
